The prospective appointment of VC Black to the Board of Deloitte, coming in the wake of the PwC tax leaks scandal, raises some major issues, including potentially the very same ‘Chinese wall’ issues that featured so prominently in that scandal.
Accordingly I have submitted an RTI application to UTAS today. My detailed request for information is pictured below and is largely self-explanatory.
At the very least, the prospective appointment appears extraordinarily ill-judged by both VC Black and Deloitte.
It is also notable that the appointment occurs at a time when UTAS is facing major (largely self-inflicted) difficulties, including:
- An increasing number of Tasmanian students choosing to enrol in interstate universities (see my previous blog post on this issue, which I will shortly update); and
- Financial issues flowing principally from the flawed and massively undercosted decision of the UTAS Council on 5 April 2019 to relocate UTAS’ southern campus from Sandy Bay (only solvable by UTAS upgrading the Sandy Bay campus as an inter-disciplinary campus, and selling out of its ill-judged property acquisitions).
The people of Tasmania are entitled to expect the highly paid VC of UTAS to be fully focused on addressing these issues.

Well done as always Robert! It is absolutely shocking that this is Rufus’ ‘next move’. The man has no ethics, conscience or decency. I look forward to hearing how the FOI responses go. I am sure they will be asking for extensions. After all telling the truth is so hard!!! For UTAS executive that is.
